Pergola is an historical town. It was founded in 1234 but had started being populated during the prehistoric period by Umbrians, Etruscans, Celts and Romans. The historical preserves the typical mediaeval architecture with stoe buildings, towers, ogival arche gates, bass-relieves and a lot of churches as to testify the importance of Pergola along the centuries.
Don’t miss the local museum, the “Museo dei Bronzi Dorati e della Città di Pergola”.
The Fortress still testifies the huge work of Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the Marches. Really well preserved , it was built for Giovanni della Rovere together with the close fortress of Mondolfo which was razed to the ground during the second half of the XIX century. The fortress of Mondavio goes probably back to the late period of the Sienese architect (last decade of the XV cen.).
The donjon dominates the building which was supposed to be even more elaborated. On the contary, The majority of internal rooms still mantain the original project.
In the donjon, the residencial area is on the higher level, where there used to be the lord’s room and the access to the defensive zone. Nowadays this area contains a museum with an outstanding collection of mediaeval armours and military tools.

It is situated between two Italian regions (Emilia-Romagna and the Marches) and is considered as the eldest of the world’s existing Republics. It goes back to the XVII century, but the local community is even older, since it seems to go back to the A.D. 301.

The Conero Regional Park was founded in 1987 but implemented in 1991only: it is aprotected oasis 5800 hectares wide, presenting a lot of terrific places (the Portonovo Bay, beaches, landscapes and 18 different trakking routes winding through dozens of different trees and plants (they represent one third of the whole flora of the aera). The Ducal Palace is quite well-known worldwide (most of all because of its little keeps on the lower side). You can also find the house of Raphael presenting a juvenile fresco and the original rooms and forniture that go back to the times when the painter was alive. The neoclassic Dome (the architect was Giuseppe Valadier) contains some canvas of Federico Barocci. Gola del Furlo
Distance: 45 km
Close to the town of Fossombrone there is the Furlo Massif, halfway between the coast and the Appenines. It is the Furlo Gorge, a deep and narrow cleft separating two maountains the Pagnucco (976m) and the Pietralata (888m). Almost vertical walls engraved in the limestone in the middle of which the Candigliano river flows. This represents the amministrative edge of 4 different municipalities. The river wedges itself in the gorge and in the narrowest point it overcomes the 10m drop by means of a fall; later on a dike was built and it’s totally visible by the road running along, the famous Via Flaminia.
These particular characteristics in the local morphology made the gorge uneasy to cross and represent a division element in an unavoidable passage between the Metauro Valley and the inner one, Valle del Burano, anteroom to the Tiber Valley. This area has recently been defined National Natural Preserve.
